“Preventing injuries is obviously better than treating them once they’ve occurred. Runner and naprapath Helena Östlund demonstrates three exercises that help runners – and walkers – handle winter conditions.”
Here are Helena's top three tips for avoiding injuries when running on slippery surfaces:
Adjust your speed to the surface – if it's slippery, take it a bit easier. Also, try focusing on running for a certain amount of time instead of a specific distance.
Use traction cleats. They should be stable and provide a secure grip.
Strengthen your glutes and core, and work on stability in your ankles and knees.
