As we now face the "third wave" of the coronavirus pandemic, the importance of physical activity is greater than ever.

It is well established that physical activity is one of the most effective tools for improving health. Evidence from numerous well-controlled studies shows that regular physical activity of at least moderate intensity increases resistance to viral diseases, highlighting the importance of physical activity from a disease prevention perspective as well.
Last autumn, the WHO issued new recommendations on physical activity. The main message is to increase movement in daily life and reduce sedentary time, noting that 2.5 to 5 hours of moderate-intensity physical activity per week is required to achieve significant health benefits. Unfortunately, population surveys conducted before the pandemic show that a large proportion of the population does not reach these levels. In an opinion piece in the Swedish Medical Journal (Läkartidningen), it is therefore suggested that the Public Health Agency of Sweden should supplement its message of "Stay home if you have symptoms, keep your distance, and wash your hands" with "Move more, sit less, and be physically active for at least half an hour every day." We couldn't agree more!
This spring, the Public Health Agency of Sweden will for the first time launch Swedish guidelines for physical activity and reduced sedentary time, which will serve as a support for existing organizations working with physical activity. Looking forward to it!
