How does it work?

Osteopaths have in-depth knowledge of muscles, joints, nerves, and connective tissue, as well as the differential diagnostic skills required to work under independent medical professional responsibility. Osteopathic diagnostics aim to identify factors contributing to pain and dysfunction and to determine which treatment strategy is most appropriate for the individual patient.

Osteopathic care is characterized by an effort to meet the patient from a holistic perspective where individual circumstances, needs, and resources are taken into account. A particular focus is directed toward the musculoskeletal system and how this organ system can both influence and be influenced by conditions in other bodily systems. Within the osteopathic tradition, this approach has historically been formulated through a number of principles that emphasize the interaction between the body's structure and function, as well as the individual's ability to maintain health and recover from illness.

The osteopathic consultation is based on an integrated clinical assessment where the patient's symptom profile, functional situation, and medical background are weighed together. Patient history

The conversation includes questions about when the symptoms arose, how they have developed over time, and which factors affect them.

The osteopath also asks about previous illnesses and injuries, previous treatments, medication use, and the patient's work and activity patterns. This information helps identify factors that may affect loading, recovery, and function in the musculoskeletal system. At the same time, signs of conditions requiring medical investigation or other care are noted.

An important part of the patient history is understanding how the person seeking care experiences their symptoms and what consequences these have in everyday life. This person-centered perspective means that the patient's experiences, goals, and expectations are integrated into the subsequent clinical assessment and treatment planning.

Clinical examination

The clinical examination is conducted in dialogue with the patient, and the osteopath continuously informs the patient about what the various steps involve. The examination aims to identify which structures or functional relationships may contribute to the patient's symptoms and to determine whether the condition is suitable for osteopathic care or if further medical investigation should be considered.
The examination includes an assessment of movement patterns as well as specific tests of muscles, joints, and the nervous system. Active and passive movements are analyzed to assess mobility, pain response, and movement quality. Neurological and orthopedic tests are used to identify potential nerve involvement or structural injuries.

A traditionally central part of the osteopathic examination is the manual assessment. Through palpation and movement tests, the osteopath analyzes how joints, muscles, and connective tissue interact during movement and loading. Once the examination is completed, a clinical working diagnosis is formulated, which forms the basis for the treatment plan. Osteopathic care may include manual treatment, advice on pain management, movement and rehabilitation, as well as health-promoting lifestyle advice. The goal is to support the patient's function and contribute to sustainable recovery. Osteopathic manual treatment

Osteopathic treatment includes a wide range of manual techniques used to assess and treat pain and dysfunction in the musculoskeletal system and related body systems. These techniques are an essential part of osteopathic clinical practice.

Osteopaths use their hands as a clinical tool to examine movement, tissue quality, and biomechanical relationships in the body. This manual examination is integrated with patient history, clinical tests, and differential diagnostic considerations to create a holistic understanding of the patient's condition.

Manual treatment is adapted to the patient's needs and the clinical situation. During their training, students develop skills in a large number of techniques used in modern osteopathic and musculoskeletal care. These may include joint mobilization and manipulation, various forms of soft tissue treatment, including therapeutic stretching and treatment of myofascial trigger points. During the program, students also explore treatment methods of a more unloading nature, which in some contexts are referred to as "functional" or "indirect." Regardless of the treatment technique chosen, manual handling is integrated with patient education and advice on activity and rehabilitation. Students are therefore trained to develop a structured clinical reasoning process where manual techniques are used in a reflective and purposeful manner in relation to the patient's symptom presentation and unique life circumstances.

Instruction in osteopathic treatment takes place within the framework of evidence-informed practice, where research, clinical experience, and the patient's perspective are weighed together. Osteopathic manual treatment is often used for musculoskeletal issues such as back and neck pain, joint problems, and function-related pain conditions. In clinical practice, treatment is carried out in dialogue with the patient and, when relevant, in collaboration with other healthcare professionals.
