KHAST is a research project conducted at the Musculoskeletal & Sports Injury Epidemiology Center at Karolinska Institutet, in collaboration with the Swedish Handball Federation and the School of Naprapathy. The purpose of this project is to increase knowledge regarding risk factors for shoulder injuries in young elite handball players and how these injuries can be prevented.

The project is led by Eva Skillgate, licensed naprapath and associate professor, and Martin Asker, licensed naprapath, lecturer at the School of Naprapathy, and doctoral student. Over the years, this project has gained international attention, and its findings have been presented in countries including the USA, Australia, Spain, Monaco, and Switzerland, in addition to our Nordic neighbors.
This sub-study, recently published in the journal Knee Surgery, Sports Traumatology, Arthroscopy (KSSTA), reports a high prevalence of shoulder problems among young elite handball players, with higher rates observed in girls and backcourt players. These results highlight the importance of implementing injury prevention measures at an early age.
