The Nobel laureates' research explains how heat, cold, and mechanical stimuli are converted into nerve impulses. The so-called "TRP channels" are central to our ability to perceive temperature, while "Piezo channels" register touch and proprioception, and are also necessary for regulating blood pressure, respiration, and erythrocyte volume. The research groups hope that the discovery of these ion channels can serve as targets for developing new and better treatment strategies for a range of medical conditions, such as chronic pain.
