At this moment, the world’s scientific gaze is fixed on Sweden and this year’s Nobel Prize ceremony, which is being held at the Stockholm Concert Hall.

The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine to William G. Kaelin Jr., Sir Peter J. Ratcliffe, and Gregg L. Semenza for their discoveries of how cells sense and adapt to oxygen availability.
The press release states that “the prize-winning mechanism is of fundamental importance for our physiology, including cellular energy metabolism, our immune system, and how our tissues respond to exercise. A number of pathological processes are also affected. Intensive work is underway to develop new drugs that can either stimulate or inhibit oxygen regulation for the treatment of anemia, cancer, and other diseases.” Many of these physiological mechanisms are important within the fields of sports medicine and manual medicine.

Thanks to the groundbreaking discoveries of these three physicians, we can now learn more about how these fundamental mechanisms interact within our bodies!
