Over two days, five students from NIMM participated in a dissection course at the University of Turku. The course gave the students the opportunity to deepen their knowledge of anatomy and biomechanics through practical work and observation of human body structures.
Experiencing anatomy in real life provided new perspectives and a deeper understanding of how the body's various structures work together—something that can be difficult to fully grasp through books and images alone.
Below, the students share their own reflections following the course.
Mattis
"How three-dimensional anatomy actually is, and how the structures lie in relation to one another. It provided a completely different understanding than what you get from books and images. Seeing how tissues and structures actually move in relation to each other made it easier to understand biomechanics, function, and the reasoning behind various examination methods."
Thea
"It felt surreal to actually see, feel, and touch all the structures we have learned about. Seeing and gaining perspective on how big or small certain things are in the body was shocking! But also fun in a slightly unsettling way. It was a valuable opportunity to have."

"Seeing anatomy in three dimensions and with my own hands provided a completely different understanding than what books and images can convey."

"That the ligaments in the upper neck, despite their small size, provide extreme strength, and that we have minimal ability to influence them—but also how a damaged ligament will feel during our tests, and how little we can, for example, slacken the alar ligaments."
Riki
"I was surprised by how stable and hard the ligaments actually are, as well as their strength and rigidity in the shoulders, neck, and knees, to name a few. Also, things like bursae, which are not nearly as distinct as you might think, and the clear stability of the neck even after all the muscles have been removed."
