This international congress, focusing on low back and pelvic pain, is held every three years. The scientific program chairs this year were Andry Vleeming (Netherlands/Belgium/USA), Dinesh Verma (Singapore), and Ted Dreisinger (USA). Many at the School of Naprapathy are familiar with Andry Vleeming from last year's FoMM workshops.
The purpose of the congress is to highlight scientific and clinical aspects of low back and pelvic pain from a multidisciplinary perspective. The goal is to bring together clinicians and researchers from all continents and fields, including physicians, orthopedists, neurosurgeons, physical therapists, chiropractors, osteopaths, naprapaths, biomechanists, and sports medicine specialists. This year's congress attracted over 700 participants from 56 different countries. Sweden was well represented with a total of 48 participants.
In addition to a number of poster presentations authored by Swedish naprapaths, Associate Professor and licensed naprapath Eva Skillgate, MUSIC, KI, gave an oral presentation of her research findings regarding the impact of various lifestyle factors on chronic low back pain. Furthermore, licensed naprapaths Tim Hustad and Filip Danielsson presented the results of their 2013 thesis from the School of Naprapathy, titled “A comparison of the effects of connective tissue massage and classical massage on low back pain: A randomized controlled trial,” supervised by licensed naprapath and lecturer at the School of Naprapathy, Peter Viklund.
It is impossible not to feel proud of the success Swedish naprapaths are achieving at such an international forum. The next congress will be held in Copenhagen in 2019, which will hopefully mean that naprapaths will make up the majority of the participants!
