A chiropractic education that takes you all the way

The Programme in Chiropractic is externally quality-assured and under the state supervision of the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ). Students from Sweden, Norway, and Finland are eligible to apply for student financial aid to fund their studies.

During the programme in Chiropractic, you will gain a combination of breadth and depth in your studies, ranging from subjects like anatomy, physiology, and neurology to specialized areas such as diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders. A central part of the Programme in Chiropractic is early patient contact. As early as your second semester, you will begin clinical training, where you will see and treat patients under the supervision of licensed therapists at the college's clinic at Odenplan in central Stockholm. After your first academic year, you also have the opportunity to become a certified massage therapist through the Swedish Massage Industry Council (BSM) and a certified personal trainer (PT). This early and continuous patient-facing work provides you as a student with invaluable experience and a competitive foundation upon which to build your future professional career.

The path to licensure

After four years of study and graduation, you as a chiropractor have the opportunity to begin your internship, which is a requirement for applying for a license issued by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden or the Norwegian Directorate of Health in Norway. The program focuses on preparing you to meet future challenges in healthcare, with a special emphasis on evidence-based methods and a person-centered approach. Whether you, as a licensed chiropractor, want to start your own clinic, work as an employee, or be part of a multidisciplinary team with doctors and physiotherapists, the Programme in Chiropractic gives you a stable foundation to stand on.

Parts of the education are taken together with students from the naprapathy and osteopathy programs. With over 50 years of experience, NIMM has built a stable, high-quality education. Because the programs are conducted in parallel, a natural interprofessional collaboration is created, where you have the opportunity to cooperate and exchange knowledge with future naprapaths and osteopaths.

Programme in Chiropractic content

Over the four years of study, you are offered an education that combines theoretical studies with practical and clinical training to provide you with both broad and deep competence. During the program, you gain a combination of breadth and depth, studying everything from anatomy, physiology, and neurology to specialized areas such as diagnostics, treatment, and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders. At the same time, you develop a deeper understanding and knowledge of the fundamental disciplines of chiropractic, such as manual treatment techniques and patient-centered care based on an evidence-based approach.

The program focuses on supporting you in developing the skills to diagnose and treat musculoskeletal disorders. Through practical components, you learn techniques such as adjustment, mobilization, soft tissue treatment, and other methods aimed at restoring body function and reducing pain. You will also study exercise science, rehabilitation, and public health, which provides you with an integrated perspective on patient care.

The Programme in Chiropractic is organized with early and continuous patient contact, which prepares you as a student for your future professional life. As early as the second semester, you begin your clinical training at the college's clinic, where you receive and treat your own patients under supervision. This gives you the opportunity to translate your theoretical knowledge into practical situations and develop your ability to make well-founded and evidence-based decisions.

The program places great emphasis on scientific methodology and research, where you learn to interpret and apply research results in your clinical work. During the final year, you have the opportunity to delve into an area that interests you by writing a thesis, which is also an opportunity to contribute to the development of knowledge within the profession.

After completing all courses and graduating, you are eligible to begin your internship. The internship is a necessary step to obtain a license as a chiropractor, a process managed by the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden or the Norwegian Directorate of Health in Norway. The education prepares you to meet future changes in the profession and places special emphasis on continuous professional development.

Subject areas

The Programme in Chiropractic comprises several subject areas that are integrated to provide a broad and deep understanding of the profession. The courses are divided into six subject areas: body structure and function, health and disease, chiropractic, sports medicine, scientific development, and professional development. The central and most extensive subject area is chiropractic, which serves as the program's main field and includes theoretical studies, practical components, and clinical practice.

The program includes courses at both the undergraduate and advanced levels. Advanced studies, comprising 60 credits (equivalent to one year of study), begin in the sixth semester and provide you with the opportunity to deepen your knowledge in specific subjects. The courses focus on the advanced application of various treatment methods, evidence-based care, and clinical reasoning.

Pedagogy

As a student in the Programme in Chiropractic, you receive an education that uniquely combines theoretical knowledge with practical skills and clinical experience. The theory provides you with a solid understanding of medical subjects, while the practical training focuses on developing your technical proficiency and clinical competence. The program is conducted in modern teaching facilities equipped to support an interactive and stimulating study environment.

You are gradually introduced to practical elements, allowing your knowledge and skills to develop before you begin treating patients. During the clinical part of the program, you have the opportunity to meet and treat patients under the expert supervision of experienced therapists. Clinical training takes place at the college's own clinic, where you can test your knowledge in various healthcare situations. Through this patient-centered work, you have the opportunity to integrate scientific findings with practical skills.

The program encourages reflection and problem-solving, helping you develop an evidence-based approach to your work. The pedagogical model prepares you for your future professional life and emphasizes the importance of lifelong learning.

Research connection

As a student in the Programme in Chiropractic, you receive an education closely linked to research, ensuring that your studies rest on a scientific foundation. A large proportion of the program's teachers hold doctoral degrees and/or are active researchers affiliated with institutions such as Karolinska Institutet, Sophiahemmet University, and the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences. This gives you the opportunity to take part in current research and to develop your ability for independent and critical thinking.

The program's courses have a clear research connection, which contributes to a deeper insight into scientific methods and their application. You will learn to analyze and apply research results in practical and clinical contexts. Courses in scientific theory and method form an important foundation for understanding and applying evidence-based care.

From semester 6, you have the opportunity to carry out a degree project where you delve into a subject that interests you and is relevant to chiropractic. The degree project gives you the opportunity to work closely with active researchers, which strengthens your scientific competence and your understanding of how research contributes to the development of the field of manual medicine.

As a student, you have the opportunity to integrate research results into your education and use them as a valuable source of knowledge. You can also participate actively in ongoing projects, which gives you experience in scientific work and a deeper understanding of how research contributes to the development of the field. The institution's strong research connection and collaborations with other universities and colleges provide you with a solid foundation for working in a professional role where scientific evidence is central.

Research at the institution's clinic

As a student in the Programme in Chiropractic, you have the opportunity to actively participate in clinical research closely linked to the education. The program offers a unique platform for combining clinical training and research, where you are given the opportunity to contribute to the scientific foundation of chiropractic.

At the institution's clinic, studies are conducted that, among other things, explore the effects of various treatment methods. One of the larger projects, carried out together with Karolinska Institutet, focuses on comparing different combinations of manual treatment techniques to optimize care for musculoskeletal disorders. Another research project conducted with Sophiahemmet University studies factors that influence the progression of pain in back and neck problems, providing important insights for future treatment methods.

Collaboration with Karolinska Institutet & Sophiahemmet University

The institution has long-standing collaborations with some of Sweden's most prominent research institutions, including Karolinska Institutet and Sophiahemmet University. These collaborations, initiated to strengthen research and development in manual medicine, have resulted in several significant projects. Through these efforts, the institution contributes to building a solid scientific foundation in manual medicine and improving treatment methods for patients with musculoskeletal disorders.

Within the framework of these collaborations, scientific studies of high international standard are conducted. The studies aim to improve the understanding of how manual treatment techniques affect patients over time and to examine prognoses for various pain conditions, such as back and neck issues. Research results are regularly published in international journals and used to further develop evidence-based care within the field.

In addition to these long-term studies, research collaboration is also conducted in sports medicine and rehabilitation. These projects examine the effects of manual medicine on sports injuries, training-related issues, and performance. The projects contribute valuable insights into how treatments can be adapted and optimized to meet the needs of individuals with different specific conditions.

HEP – Higher Education with Elite Sports-Adapted Program

If you are an elite athlete and want to combine your sports career with an education, the Programme in Chiropractic offers a unique opportunity. The institution has a specially adapted program for those who are committed to elite sports while studying to become a chiropractor. Through individual study planning and schedule adjustments, you can balance both training and competition with your studies.

We understand that elite sports require great commitment, with significant time spent on training, travel, and competitions. Therefore, we ensure that your schedule can be adapted to your needs so that you do not have to choose between your passion for sports and your future career as a chiropractor. Through the elite sports-adapted program, you can continue to develop in both areas.

The educational program also gives you a unique advantage as an athlete. By studying chiropractic, you gain a deeper understanding of how the body functions, which can help you optimize your own performance and manage injuries. At the same time, we prepare you for a future career where you can help other athletes perform at their best.

The qualities that make you successful as an athlete—discipline, goal-orientation, and the ability to handle pressure—are also invaluable in your studies. These qualities will help you perform at your peak during your education as well. We ensure you receive the right support to manage both academic requirements and athletic challenges.

Chiropractic degree & professional registration

Upon successful completion of the four-year Programme in Chiropractic, you will receive a degree in chiropractic. This professional degree is a requirement for completing the one-year clinical internship mandated in Sweden and for applying for professional registration with the National Board of Health and Welfare in Sweden or the Norwegian Directorate of Health. During the internship, which takes place under the supervision of experienced, licensed chiropractors and other healthcare providers, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in a real-world clinical environment. This step is crucial for translating your theoretical knowledge into practice and preparing you for your future role as an independent, licensed chiropractor.

In Sweden, "chiropractor" is a protected professional title, meaning that only individuals with professional registration, a special authorization, or those undergoing clinical internship are entitled to call themselves chiropractors. Professional registration is regulated under the Patient Safety Act, and as a licensed chiropractor, you are covered by the Patient Safety Act (2010:659). These laws ensure that you, as a healthcare provider, adhere to high standards of competence and patient safety.
